Drama Controlled Assessment Item 2 and 3 June 27th 2016

Item 2 –

The situation in this monologue was based on the original play with 2 other cast members.  I was only 8 years old when the play was done, in this monologue I was now 18 years old and ten years had past. I decided to make it 10 years later to show the audience what had happend in his life. I was going to carry on and do it from when he was 8 but thought this would not allow the audience to understand the real person in the play. (Young  boy).

The character that appeared was the eight old boy that now was eighteen.  Male,6 ft 3 in, he looked  like a bodybuilder or someone that worked out (bouncer). I wanted to make the boy more mature, also to show he had now become a family man and to show how what had happen 10 years previously had changed him and made him the man he is today.  Also wanted to show the effects on him as a human being. Effects of losing his mum, being brought up in a war torn country, seeing violence and death all round him.  The character attitudes is more relaxed and calculated and he is not aggressive as he was as young teenager.  The way I developed this was to show the audience the pain and suffering of being in a war-torn country and to show young people that you can still move on with your life even though he had a bad childhood.

I developed the character  based on the boxer Charles Martin, who is a professional boxer from USA. He had a tough childhood because he lost his dad at a young age. He lived in a rundown estate, where there was lots of drugs and fights in his area.  He grew up with the wish to make a name for himself and show people he could do it.  That is why I choose this sort of character to have the same kind of personality as the man in the play.

How I played the character in the play to show the audience what he was like, I used a countryside accent to show he was from the country, also I used a deeper voice to show he aged.   The character was upset in the play because he was talking to his mother’s picture so his voice was sad, low and angry and emotional.  His body language including him moving around anxiously and in a depressed way. He was holding a picture of his mum.

I developed my piece by using improvisation why because it was easier for me to describe the situation what was happening and also to be able to be angry and sad at the same time.  This help me to work out what I wanted to put into a script later.  Which meant the words I would use.

How may I develop this further to strengthen the communication make it more inspirational to let the audience see a brighter future of what can happen to people in  war.

ITEM 3 – Design Idea

In the countryside house, the scene was in a bedroom, it was dark room with just a bed and a lamp which was on and beside the lamp was a teddy bear which he kept from when he was eight.

The design of the stage was the backdrop a picture that looked like the countryside with a house in it.  This shows the audience we are in the countryside.  The bed room was backstage because its dark and I wanted to be able to have space on the stage to move around. The set design of the room is dark with black walls and the only furniture in the room is a bed and a small bedside lamp. this will allow the audience to see how the war has effected the young boy  growing up.

The design shows that the man in the play has grownup from the first play, he was angry and anxious but also was able to survive from what went on.

By using this design I can show the audience that he have now got strength and weakness in the character and that he has developed from when we first met him as a eight year old.  Where we saw him scared about his father telling him to choose 2 toys to take with him.

looking at quotes and meanings from Great Expectations

“Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but – I hope – into a better shape.”

This appears in Charles dickens Great Expectations  in Chapter 59. this is where pip goes back after 11 years to visit Joe and biddy and it has brought back memories about whats happend over his life.

This quote comes form when Pip meets Estella and they both start talking about how they feel. Pip always loved Estella since he met her at Ms Haversham. Pip kept his feelings from Estella because thought he was not intelligent or posh enough for her. This shows in the words form the “Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching”.

Great expectation quotes arbaz

Quote 1

I had heard of Miss Havisham up town—everybody for miles round, had heard of Miss Havisham up town—as an immensely rich and grim lady who lived in a large and dismal house barricaded against robbers, and who led a life of seclusion. (7.80)

Pip’s hometown is socially stratified. He lives in the “village,” and Miss Havisham lives “up town.” Apart from reminding us of a certain Billy Joel song, this delineation between the wealthy and working class in Kent is palpable and is reinforced by the gate that guards Miss Havisham’s decaying riches. Also, notice that great privilege is closely linked to loneliness?

Quote 2

“I wished Joe had been rather more genteelly brought up, and then I should have been so too. Chapter 8”

Pip is saying that Joe  should have been brought up with manners and that why he was brought up in a rough way and due to this pip has had a hard up bringing and does not  understand the finer things in life

Quote 3

“I had heard of Miss Havisham up town—everybody for miles round, had heard of Miss Havisham up town—as an immensely rich and grim lady who lived in a large and dismal house barricaded against robbers, and who led a life of seclusion.”  Chapter 7 ”

means that pip lives in the villiage and miss havisham lives up town which means that she lives in the posh part .dickens describes her house as very large and is set up to protect her from any robbers

Quote from Great Expectations for revision

“I was always treated as if I had insisted on being born in opposition to the dictates of reason, religion, and morality, and against the arguments of my best friends.” Chapter 4

This shows that Pip has a sense of guilt on having been born. As if his presence is an affront to nature itself. An interesting way also for saying that the world despises his very existence….

“There have been occasions in my later life (I suppose as in most lives) when I have felt for a time as if a thick curtain had fallen on all its interest and romance, to shut me out from anything save dull endurance any more. Never has that curtain dropped so heavy and blank, as when my way in life lay stretched out straight before me through the newly-entered road of apprenticeship to Joe.” Chapter 14
